Paige Audrey Bronchick was born in 1996 with a complex series of congenital heart defects. Twenty-four hours after her birth, a pediatric cardiologist was brought in for a routine check of a "slight murmur." The diagnosis was shattering: a baffling mix of heart defects for which there was no apparent surgical repair. Despite the terrible odds, Paige came home from the hospital after just three weeks with her parents, Jeffrey and Deirdre, and miraculously thrived. Except for an intense medicinal regimen and some eating difficulties, Paige was wonderfully "normal." She never seemed to be in any pain or discomfort and despite the terrible cloud hanging over their heads, her family was gloriously happy. After some months, her medical team determined that, given her relatively good health and the fact that she was now of sufficient size to contemplate surgery, treatment should be undertaken. Paige's family was presented with the option of being put on a transplant waiting list or attempting a high-risk surgery. After over eight hours of difficult surgery, Paige's heart never restarted coming off the heart-lung machine and she passed away just shy of her six-month birthday.
